I and a couple of mates were involved in planning the itinerary for the Home Counties Railway Society “Six Counties” Rail Tour. We wanted to run a special to include the SMJ and with the most outlandish combination of locos that we could come up with from what was available. Naturally, they had to be ex Southern Railway engines as these were the least likely to have ever run on the SMJ! That is why we ended up with a Class U 2-6-0 and a Q1 0-6-0.
